Alexis Childress (1993) is a visual artist born in Illinois. She received her BFA from Georgia State University and her MFA from the University of California Santa Barbara and is currently an Instructor of Art at the College of Creative Studies. Her work uses 2D and 3D digital sculpture and collage to investigate Black American identity, systems of power and Astro-Blackness -"the emergence of a black identity framework within emerging global technocultural assemblages, migration, human reproduction, algorithms, [and] digital networks."
Her work has culminated into solo exhibitions at Camayuhs Gallery (GA), Wesleyan Women’s College (GA) and The Bakery (GA), as well as group exhibitions at Riviera Beach House (CA), The Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts, Morean Arts Center (FL), Atlanta Photography Group Gallery, Phipps Center for the Arts (WI) and California State University Long Beach School of Art. Her contributions in authorship have been published in Burnaway Magazine, The New York Public Library Zine, and Nature Portfolio’s Scientific Reports. She has also been awarded the Georgia Visual Artists Grant, Red Bull Arts Microgrant, as well as the Eugene Cobbs Fellowship and the College of Creative Studies Teaching Fellowship at the University of California Santa Barbara. As a scholar, Alexis has presented her work and research at the Society of Photographic Education’s 2021 National Conference and the 2026 Graduate Symposium at the University of California Santa Barbara.
"My work seeks to intervene in the way knowledge is defined, stored, and transmitted, advocating for futures in which Black culture is not merely included in technological systems, but foundational to their design. I strive to weave threads of imagination, history, scholarship and activism into a practice that spans disciplines and boldly questions the systems in authority."
